Underwater services

Underwater services refer to exploring, installing, or repairing which requires a diver to go underwater. Most of us have heard of the term but how many know what it is all about. Well, to help you understand a little better, here’s a general description:

For divers to perform their services effectively, they need the proper equipment and tools. These are essential to ensure that the job gets done properly. The equipment required varies with the kind of work being done.

The first thing divers need is the right atmosphere to work in. This means that they can’t go all out undersea pressure. To achieve this, they have pressurized suits which give them air supply while performing their functions.

Since diving has a lot of risks, there is a need for divers to go through training before they can be allowed to work. The knowledge acquired from the course enables them to undertake their job with less likelihood of accidents occurring. There are three kinds of training – entry-level, advanced level, and specialist diver. Entry-level courses include the open water diver. The advanced level courses include deep diver, wreck, or trimix divers. Meanwhile, the specialist diver training includes gas blower, bellman, and hyperbaric medical technician.

As their primary job is to install underwater services needed by companies working at sea, divers need tools for this purpose. These are used to cut, drill, grind and seal. For example, they have a tool known as an underwater cutting machine that uses a stream of high-pressure water to cut soft materials like coral and rocks. There is also the airlift tool that blows sediment away from what needs to be exposed. The diver can choose between an open arc cutter and a plasma cutter depending on the material the machine needs to get through.

An underwater service is defined as any work done underwater, requiring a diver and his equipment. This usually involves installing pipelines and cables; exploration; survey of the seabed, etc. which always demands special skills and expertise due to the high risk of accidents that may occur during such operations. Other jobs of divers also include containment of oil spills, inspection, and maintenance of offshore platforms that are fixed on the seabed.

As technology has advanced, this sector of work has become more challenging than ever before. Divers need to continuously update their knowledge and skills, ensuring that they can carry out their tasks with minimum risks. However, apart from all this, there is a need for these underwater service providers to be of good character. This means that they cannot afford to do something that would go against the law at any time when on duty.
